As I sit and stare at the pile of clothes on my bedroom floor I wonder how I could have let this happen. Its 2 am and my flight leaves in 6 hours. I haven’t put one thing in my suitcase. How does a college student from Alabama pack for London for a month? Packing for London, a notoriously fashionable city, seems like a daunting task for my Alabama-college-student wardrobe that consists mainly of oversized t-shirts and shorts.
Granted, I’m not going to London to study fashion. I’m going for journalism. Not a journalism class, per say, but a class entitled “London: Culture Capital of the World.” However, I chose this class specifically because of my journalism major. In journalism you write about people, you write about trends, you write about the world. It’s the people that create the trends that shape the world. I’m excited to be taking this class in one of the most culturally diverse cities on Earth. London is a leading city of history, music, fashion, entertainment and the arts, literature and so much more.
I’ve never been to the U.K. before. In fact, I’ve only left the US one time in my life. However, my nerves about travelling to a foreign country are overshadowed by my excitement. The idea of me actually getting on a plane and going to the U.K. doesn’t feel real yet. I’ve dreamed about going to London for as long as I can remember and now I’m finally about to make that happen. If I can finish packing, that is.
