A year ago, I would never have imagined I would step off a plane and set foot into my dream
travel destination, let alone have the opportunity to study abroad allowing myself to be fully
immersed into Italian culture. On arrival the Naples airport was full of chaos as travelers across
the world are hustling to collect their baggage and head onto the streets of Naples and beyond.
One of those travelers was me. With my luggage in tow and friends by my side I headed to find
the representative from the Sant’Anna Institute who would be taking us to our transportation
to Sorrento. As soon as I stepped foot onto the bus, I was greeted with many smiling faces of
those who also took a leap of faith by deciding to study abroad. Besides my two friends that I
traveled to Italy with that I met at the University of Alabama last year, I met many other girls
that also call The University of Alabama home which quickly helped me feel more comfortable.
Due to jet lag, I drifted into a light slumber, but woke up at the perfect time. When I opened my
eyes from my hour-long nap, I had an eagle’s eye view of the coast of Sorrento while coming
down a neighboring mountain. The stunning view from my bus window was one I will never
forget. That beautiful view of a rugged mountainside coastal town reminded me that just as my
eyes were gazing upon something new, that my mind was also opening to something not only
new, but life changing!
