During my three weeks at UA in Portugal: European Innovation Academy, I had the opportunity to participate in many activities that greatly enriched my study abroad experience. While the classroom offered can offer you valuable lessons about a country’s culture, nothing beats living it firsthand!
Surfing at Matosinhos Beach
Going into this trip, I knew very little about Portugal. But I did know its reputation for surfing, so getting a crash course in surfing was a top priority for me. I joined a group of fellow Alabama students at the FISH Surf School at Matosinhos Beach, a popular surfing destination in Porto. During our 1.5-hour class, we got changed, warmed up, learned surfing basics, and had the chance to ride some waves. Even as a Southerner with limited experience with surfing or freezing water, I still had a blast learning to surf.
Pastel de Nata Making Class
On our last week of class, my whole program went to a local art store to learn how to make pastel de nata, a traditional Portuguese egg tart. We worked in teams to create the lemon and cinnamon custard, which we used to fill pastry tins. Our teachers were engaging, explaining how I could even make a pastel de nata pie with their recipe. Undoubtedly, I will be trying out my newfound baking skills at home with my family.
Sailing Down the Douro River
One of my favorite activities of the trip! Our group split into four boats for a sunset cruise down the Douro (which runs through Porto) and out into the Atlantic Ocean. It was a beautiful ride, complemented by charcuterie, drinks, and even the ability to play our own music on the boat’s speakers.
Arrábida Bridge Climb
I was a little wary of this activity because of my slight fear of heights. I am so glad I pushed myself to sign up because the view was incredible! Also, the climb was essentially going up very steep stairs that we were attached to via harnesses. I felt very safe and even got a sample of port wine in a chocolate cup at the top. Totally worth it!
My advice: plan some activities you could not access at home during your study abroad! Include some educational ones, like the pastel de nata making course, to learn more about local culture. Choose some adventurous activities too! After all, Tuscaloosa is not known for its bridge climbing and/or surfing scene. When I left for Portugal, I aimed to culturally immerse myself in Porto. These activities helped me achieve that goal.
