During my freshman year, I heard about a study abroad trip that was going to Belize to study the biodiversity for a few weeks. Initially, I did not think this opportunity would be possible, due to my major in mechanical engineering. I had always wanted to study abroad in some capacity but did not think it would be feasible if I wanted to graduate in four years.

Last fall, I received an email from my advisor about this same study abroad opportunity, which was now eligible to count towards engineering elective credits. This immediately piqued my interest, and I realized I could not let this chance slip away.

Upon reviewing the trip’s budget, I once again questioned my ability to participate. However, I soon discovered numerous scholarship opportunities that were available for study abroad programs. Prior to applying for my study abroad program, I was completely unaware of the Gilman Award. Although this award seemed daunting at first, the study abroad department offers numerous resources to help students through the process. I found all of the advice extremely beneficial and encourage other students to utilize these tools. Thanks to scholarships from UA and other sources like the Gilman Award, I was able to turn this dream into reality.

Ultimately, I am grateful that I did not let these obstacles deter me from seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The trip profoundly influenced my outlook on my future career path and the direction I want my engineering degree to take me. I want others to know that such experiences are achievable for anyone who is determined. UA offers a variety of programs that can align with different degree plans and budgets. I am incredibly thankful for this experience and for all the support and assistance provided by UA.
