Studying abroad can be an incredibly enriching experience, offering the opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture, make lifelong friends, and gain a deeper understanding of the world around you. I knew this was an experience I wanted to have, so I decided to look for a program that sparked my interest. When I came across the UA in Belize program I immediately knew I had to go. I have always been passionate about our oceans and the outdoors and what better place to be than Belize, a country known for its stunning beaches, culture, and rich history.
Fast forward many months later, I am now preparing to leave for my study abroad program in Belize in just a few days and I wanted to share a few things I kept in mind to ensure I have a smooth and successful experience!
First, I made sure to do my research on the country to familiarize myself with the country’s customs, culture, and language. This will not only help you feel more prepared for when you arrive, but it will also show respect to the country you’ll be visiting for the next month or however long you may stay.
Next, I made sure to pack appropriately. It is important you take into account the climate in the country you are visiting and the things you expect to do with your time there. Belize typically has a very warm and humid climate and I knew I would be spending most of my time outdoors so I made sure to pack lightweight clothing, lots of sunscreen, and clothes that could dry easily since I will be spending lots of time in the water. It is also very important to make sure you have all your necessary medications, as well as your passport, and other important documents.
Once the practicalities have been taken care of, I always like to set some goals for myself that I want to get out of this experience. Whether it be immersing yourself in their culture, meeting new people, or exploring the country’s natural beauty with local conservation efforts.
Lastly, don’t forget to take care of any logistical details before you leave. Make sure to inform your bank and phone provider of your travel plans.
