This morning I woke up with a feeling that I know all too well: queasy. Whether it was the result of the overwhelming excitement I had for the day’s upcoming travel to Amsterdam or of the looming feeling that I had forgotten to pack something, it was not a feeling I enjoyed having. However, despite the fact that my stomach was literally doing backflips, I knew I needed to eat something, even if everything seemed unappetizing. Hopping on a long flight with nothing in my stomach was only going to make me feel more unwell, so I set off to wonder the airport for a bite to eat. Ultimately, I settled upon biscuits and gravy, arguably a staple of southern American breakfast cuisine. Not only did they fill my stomach with actual warmth, but they also filled me with a warmth that eased my worries; they’re a comfort food! As I enjoyed eating, I thought about how I would miss these familiar American comforts, but I also looked forward to the new things I would try abroad! Going new places and doing new things is honestly really scary, but it’s one of the best ways to learn! Before even leaving, my professors told us we would be absorbing tons of information from every which way. This statement overwhelmed me at first, but then I realized how unique of an experience studying abroad would be and that it was an opportunity I couldn’t miss!
Now that I’m here, I’ve already made new friends, tried new foods, and been new places, and so much more is to come! Maybe while I’m here I’ll even find a food that’s my new ‘biscuits and gravy’!

Moral of the story: eat a good breakfast and don’t be afraid to try new things!!
