Choosing to study abroad has been a long journey so far. I spent hours and hours looking through each program and comparing and contrasting each one. I finally decided that Climate & Water was what excited me the most. I have always really been interested in exploring the Alps region of Central Europe, and this program took place in this region.

Packing for my journey has been a challenge. I spent what felt like an eternity selecting clothes that would suit the cooler climate of the Alps region. However, I also had to pack for the warmer weather in Venice, Italy where a lot of my program took place. My suitcase is packed with various types of warm and cool clothes, but I must admit, I’m still anxious that my wardrobe might not be sufficient for the weather. It’s also a challenge because I’m a picky eater, and the thought of having to try new foods makes me a bit nervous. However, I’m trying to stay optimistic and open-minded about trying new foods.

Emotionally, I’m experiencing both anxiety and excitement. I’m thrilled about meeting new people and making new friends on this trip. The excitement of exploring Venice, my first stop, is also very exciting. Yet, I know I will miss my family and friends back in Alabama. It certainly helps that one of my best friends from Alabama is also coming on this study abroad journey with me.

My goals for this study abroad experience are centered around learning about new cultures. I hope to learn about the local customs, learn a few phrases in Italian, German, and Slovenian and fully engage with my new environment. From exploring old historical sites to simply getting to know the locals, I’m ready to embrace every moment of this study abroad trip. Overall, I’m excited for the learning and experiences that lie ahead.
