Returning home has been a mix of relief and nostalgia. When I walked through the airport, I was very excited to finally have access to my favorite fast food—Chick-fil-A. American fast food had been one of the things I had missed the most while I was abroad. I had also missed home cooked meals from my parents. But I also felt a sense of sadness because I started missing the friends and professor I left behind in Europe. However, we all promised to meet back up in Alabama during the school year so I knew I would see them again soon one day. I am looking forward to that when school starts.
My time abroad changed me in many ways. I now see the world from a broader perspective. Before, I might not have understood different cultures as well, but now, I have a deeper appreciation for them. As an American, I think we tend to view ourselves as the center of the world. Going abroad helped me broaden my worldview, and appreciate the entire world more. This has been very beneficial for me.
Adjusting back to life at home has been somewhat difficult. While it’s nice to be back in familiar surroundings, I was extremely jet-lagged when I got home. I was definitely still on European time. I can’t help but miss the unique experiences I had overseas, like the beautiful canals of Venice and the breathtaking Alps in Innsbruck. I also really enjoyed how healthy all the food was in Europe. Everyday things here feel a bit ordinary compared to the excitement of traveling. I also start my internship soon, so instead of exploring all day, I will be working. However, I did get myself a briefcase from the Italian leather market to remember my trip by at work.
For anyone thinking about studying abroad, here’s my advice: make the most of every opportunity and be ready for both the fun and the challenges. Pack smart, bringing layers for different weather, and be open to new experiences. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone—it’s all part of the adventure. Enjoy the journey and the incredible learning that comes with it! I truly had a blast while I was abroad, and I would highly recommend it.
