I decided to go abroad because I want to expand my perspective of not only the world but also myself. Having never traveled outside the U.S. before, going to a foreign place like Rome is a big leap out of my comfort zone. A key factor in my decision was the scholarship and grant money from The University of Alabama Abroad Program, which eases the financial burden and lets me focus more on the experience itself. Additionally, as I’m entering my senior year at The University of Alabama, I realize this might be one of my last chances to immerse myself in a new country for five weeks before life’s daily obligations take over.

To prepare, I’ve been watching videos and reading articles about Roman culture and historical landmarks. I’m also starting to set an agenda for my time abroad to make sure I use it wisely. As the departure date draws closer, my nerves are giving way to excitement. This trip has been a huge dream of mine, and after months of anticipation, it’s hard to believe it’s finally happening. Although I’m excited, I’ve decided not to set any specific expectations for the trip. I want to experience everything for what it is, rather than how I wish it to be.

My goals are to make new friends from different backgrounds, try out new things, and fully embrace the adventure. I’m also looking forward to stepping outside my daily routine and discovering a new rhythm of life, one that will hopefully leave me with lasting memories and a broader view of the world.
