Studying abroad with CIEE’s Open Campus Program has truly been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, and I can’t recommend it enough. What I love most about the program is the freedom it gives you to create your own adventure, from choosing where to study to customizing the length of your stay. It’s an experience that can be tailored to fit into any school calendar, with six, 12, or 18-week blocks, so you never have to worry about missing out academically.

One of the biggest highlights for me has been the chance to experience two destinations in one program. For my first six weeks, I was lucky enough to live in Paris. Those weeks were filled with exploring quaint cafés, studying in museums that are masterpieces in themselves, and learning the language from locals. Paris is a city full of history and beauty, and having the chance to live there—even briefly—brought its culture to life in a way that no class or book ever could. Now, for my second block, I’m living in Sydney, Australia. The relaxed vibe here is so refreshing, and being surrounded by stunning beaches, unique wildlife, and an entirely different culture has been an amazing way to balance my study experience.

Beyond the thrill of travel, Open Campus also helped me grow personally. I’ve learned to adapt quickly to new environments, make friends from around the world, and appreciate different ways of life. Living in these two incredible cities has expanded my worldview in ways I never expected. And because the program is so flexible, I’ve been able to truly make the experience my own, with a schedule that fits my needs and ambitions.

For those of you considering studying abroad, here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way:

1. Plan Your Finances Wisely: Traveling can get expensive, so budget carefully. Research costs for everyday things—like groceries and transportation—in each city you’ll be visiting. Also, look into student discounts for popular attractions.

  • Also take into account weekend trips/ day trips, these are so much fun and one of my favorite ways to bond and make new friends! However, they can get expensive really quick!!

2. Pack Light, Pack Smart: Trust me, you don’t need as much as you think! Pack only essentials and bring versatile clothing for different climates, especially if you’re traveling to multiple locations.

3. Learn Basic Phrases: Even if you’re not fluent in the local language, knowing a few basic phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” goes a long way in connecting with locals and showing respect for their culture.

4. Make Time to Explore: Classes and assignments are important, but make sure to immerse yourself in the local culture. Try new foods, visit historical sites, and take part in cultural events.

5. Be Open-Minded: Every city has its own rhythm, and adapting can sometimes be challenging. Embrace the differences, because that’s where you’ll find the most growth.

  • Also take advantage of the events that your program organizes!! These are always a great way to meet new people, they are typically paid for (or already included in the tuition price) and most of the time you get a free meal too!!

Studying abroad is about so much more than academics—it’s a chance to truly live, learn, and explore in places you might only have dreamed of visiting. The Open Campus Program makes that dream a reality in such a personalized and exciting way. I’ve loved every moment of it, and I hope you’ll take the leap and make it part of your journey too.

Safe travels and happy adventures!
