This course will examine the complex, and often conflicted, intersection between psychology and the law. We will explore the scientific knowledge psychologists bring to the court room and review ongoing sources of tension between these two fields. Through excursions to the English Supreme Court, the Tower of London, and the London Police Museum, students will learn about the English Criminal Justice System and how the United States adopted and altered this system. Students will consider how the unique circumstances of U.S. culture shaped the United States Judicial system. Walking tours of the locations of infamous murders, including Jack the Ripper, Dennis Nilsen, and the Soho Strangler, will aid students in the exploration of the intersection of mental health and criminal behavior.
